PHOENIX -- The ball bounced in the dirt and away from Carlos Ruiz, a play the Philadelphia catcher could have easily given up on. Instead, he pounced on the ball, threw to second and -- with the help of a replay and a heads-up tag by Chase Utley -- retired Martin Prado to help preserve the Phillies comeback victory. Pinch hitter Cody Asche hit a two-run double in Philadelphias four-run eighth inning and Ruiz kept Arizona from getting a runner in scoring position with his hustle play in the ninth, leading the Phillies to a 6-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night. "It was a hustling play," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "He could have very easily put it in his pocket there, but he made it fairly close and ended up with a big play just with the hustle." The Phillies had to rally after ace Cliff Lee allowed five runs in the first three innings. Philadelphia fought back by scoring two runs off Bronson Arroyo in the seventh and four more in the eighth against Joe Thatcher and Trevor Cahill (1-5). Jeff Manship (1-0) allowed a hit and two walks in an inning for his first win since Sept 6, 2010, with Minnesota and Jonathan Papelbon worked the ninth for his seventh save -- with an assist from Ruiz and a replay. The inning started with a single by Prado, who then was called safe on the close play at second. Sandberg checked the teams internal replay and called for a challenge, arguing Utley had tagged Prado after he came off the bag on the slide. Following a lengthy review by the umpires, Prado was called out. Papelbon then struck out Paul Goldschmidt looking, and Miguel Montero grounded out to end it. Ruiz also had three of Philadelphias 13 hits and drove in a run. The Phillies have won five of seven. "We were down by five heading into the seventh inning and to pull that off was definitely big," Lee said. Arizona had bounced back from a difficult start to the season behind its starting pitching and got a decent outing from Bronson Arroyo, who extended the rotations scoreless innings streak to 18 2-3 innings by pitching into the seventh. But Arroyo gave up two runs in the seventh and the bullpen couldnt hold the lead after he left, leading to the Diamondbacks ninth loss in 10 home games. Cody Ross had three RBIs and two hits for Arizona, which had three errors, including a dropped popup by Prado at third to start the eighth inning. "We should have had enough pitching to get through that game," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "We just didnt play well." Lee had been superb against Arizona in six previous starts, going 4-1 with a 2.93 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 43 innings. The left-hander has been dialed into the strike zone against everyone so far this season, entering Saturday nights start with 38 strikeouts and two walks. Lees control wasnt quite the same against the Diamondbacks. Arizona scored two runs off Lee in the first, including an RBI single by Ross that ended a 1-for-22 slump since returning from the disabled list with a dislocated hip. A.J. Pollock added a run-scoring triple in the second inning and Ross made it 5-0 in the third with a two-run single to left. Lee allowed three earned runs and eight hits in six innings. He also walked two to double his season total. "They were getting hits. I was missing on the plate a little bit, but they got their fair share of hits on decent pitches, too. Those things happen," Lee said. "I just feel good about keeping it where it was at after the third and continuing to put up a few zeroes there to give us a chance and definitely did that in the last three innings." Arroyo did his part, allowing two runs and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings, but Arizonas bullpen let it slip away. Thatcher allowed two runs before being lifted and Cahill laboured for the first time since moving to the bullpen. Asches big double hit first base umpire Bob Davidson before caroming toward the stands, and Ben Revere followed with a run-scoring single that made it 6-5. "It is embarrassing," Cahill said. "Bronson threw a great game. I should be able to come in and get three outs without letting them take the lead back especially with a three-run lead." In what promised to be a tricky matchup for the 21-year-old, Valanciunas held his own against the crafty Al Jefferson offensively but was taught a lesson or two on the other end. One of those moments occurred at the end of the extra period. Jefferson set a hard screen that freed up Kemba Walker, forcing Valanciunas to switch off and close out on the Bobcats guard. Walker would drain the game-winner over Valanciunas as time expired. "Weve watched film with him [and] work on it with him individually," Dwane Casey said after practice Thursday afternoon. "In the NBA, a lot depends on game experience and hes seeing every different post-up situation." Valanciunas scored 10 points and added six rebounds in 22 minutes of action Wednesday however, Jefferson poured in 24 to go along with 11 boards, leading the Bobcats with five points in overtime. "Hes still in the process, hes still learning the league, learning the speed of the game and again, hes [getting] better," Casey said, commending Valanciunas growth on the offensive end. "I thought he did an excellent job offensively when he got his catches in the post. Hes really grown from that standpoint." His biggest challenge continues to come on the defensive end, where hes still being exposed by quicker, versatile and more experienced big men. Jefferson is a nightmare assignment for any player, let alone a young and developing big. "My whole career, to this day, people always ask who the hardest [players] are to guard and I surprise them every time when I tell them Al Jefferson and Zach Randolph," said veteran forward and new teammate Chuck Hayes, who participated in his first full practice with the Raptors Wednesday. "For their size - theyre so wide - theyre light on their feet and theyve got great footwork and their shooting touch is just as good as any guard in the league." "It sucks that [Valanciunas] went through that torture chamber in a game that we needed before this road trip but its a learning process," Hayes continued. "Well see them again, Im sure and hell remember that overtime where Al got the best of him." Although Valanciunas shares the blame for what went wrong in overtime, theres plenty of it to go around.dddddddddddd. The Raptors, as a team, missed their first six field goal attempts while DeMar DeRozan shot 1-of-4. You can also cut the seven-footer some slack, given the amount of time he had spent on the bench. Valanciunas sat for over 17 minutes of game time, including the entire fourth quarter, before coming back in to start overtime. Facing Charlottes unconventional frontcourt of Jefferson and Josh McRoberts, a stretch four, Valanciunas became a late-game afterthought once again, sitting out in favour of Amir Johnson, Tyler Hansbrough, and the newly acquired Patrick Patterson. As Casey notes, it is sometimes a give-and-take with Valanciunas on the floor, certainly in a matchup like Wednesdays. Whatever advantage is gained on the offensive end, assuming the team is utilizing it, is often given right back on defence. With the game on the line, Casey - like he has done in past - opted to play it safe with more experienced and versatile defenders at the position. "Thats why its hard to win consistently with young players in the NBA," said the Raptors coach. "Jonas is going to be okay but thats the patience you have to have with a young player; take the good with the bad." While those who expected the world from Valanciunas in his second NBA season may be disappointed in the early returns, Casey is just as realistic as he is optimistic. It wont happen overnight, Casey reiterates regularly. It didnt with Tyson Chandler, it didnt with Roy Hibbert or Joakim Noah and it wont with Valanciunas. Inevitably, developing Valanciunas will become more of a priority now that Rudy Gay has been dealt. The challenge for Casey - who is trying to win first and foremost, as you would expect - centres on finding that balance between competing and nurturing the future of the franchise, a future he may not even be a part of. "I love the challenge of coaching young players, I enjoy that. I enjoy winning more," he said, half-jokingly. "But I understand where we are and what were about." Valanciunas represents the future of this team more than anyone else that is currently on the roster. The expectations, at least internally, have not changed. The word Casey continues to stress is patience. "Its a process," he insists. "Were patient [but] hes our guy, hes our starting centre for a long time and were just going to have to roll with it."
